A clearer path through hospital cost reports.

Spectral Health is building an evidence-first way to explore the Healthcare Cost Report Information System (HCRIS), the public Medicare cost-report data published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Good analysis starts with a source you can inspect, a question you can name, and a trail you can follow.

The data

Public does not always mean easy to use.

HCRIS is a valuable public record of hospital cost reporting. It is also a large, structured system whose meaning depends on knowing the source, the worksheet context, and the reporting period.

01

Rich in detail

Cost reports bring together financial, operational, staffing, service, and patient-volume information in a common reporting system.

02

Structured for experts

Finding the right value often means navigating report versions, worksheet lines, provider identifiers, and fiscal periods.

03

Worth the careful read

When a question carries its source and context, the result becomes easier to check, explain, and use responsibly.

What we are building

Useful answers with their receipts attached.

The project is shaped around a simple discipline: make the question legible, keep the data boundary visible, and preserve enough provenance for another person to retrace the work.

Start at the source

Use the CMS archive and documentation as the reference point for what a report means.

Ask focused questions

Define the provider, period, measure, and scope before interpreting a result.

Keep the trail

Record the relevant source details alongside the answer so the reasoning can be revisited.

A useful boundary

Numbers are only as clear as the question and source behind them. Spectral Health is being built to make that relationship visible.

Current status

A public introduction, while the workspace takes shape.

Spectral Health is in active development. A private local workspace is used to build and verify the product; there is no public signup, hosted analysis, billing, or live sample on this site.

This page is a guide to the project and its source material. It does not represent CMS, and it does not make a claim about a live service.
